PACCM is deeply committed to a mission of providing the highest quality, compassionate patient care for patients with lung disease, to mentoring and training medical students, residents, fellows and young faculty, and to research and scientific discovery. PACCM possesses strong translational programs of clinical and research excellence in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute lung injury, interstitial lung disease, sleep medicine, cystic fibrosis, lung transplantation, pulmonary vascular disease, critical care medicine and the functional genomics of lung diseases.

We are extremely proud of our success in basic, translational and clinical research. Our Division is one of the most highly funded Pulmonary Programs in the Nation, with more than 27 RO1 equivalents in NIH funding, two major pulmonary SCCOR grants, training grants in pulmonary and sleep medicine, and major Institutes and Centers focused on vascular biology, asthma, immunology, COPD, interstitial and advanced lung disease, lung transplantation and genetic medicine.

U.S. News and World Report recently ranked the UPMC PACCM as the number seven department in the nation for Respiratory Disorders for 2009, which is an unprecedented improvement from last year’s ranking at number thirteen.
