Mitochondrial Biology in Cardiovascular Health & Diseases

National Institutes of Health
May 16 - 17,2011
October 7-8, 2008

Understanding the regulatory control of mitochondrial biogenesis and function at the molecular level and its role in both health and diseases has made great advances. Mitochondrial biology plays an important role in the development of obesity and type II diabetes, ischemic heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases. This meeting presented topics that included: 1) Genetic diseases that modulate mitochondrial dysfunction and their association with cardiovascular conditions, including cardiac hypertrophy and Friedrich's Ataxia; 2) New imaging and proteomics technologies and their role in elucidating mitochondrial biology; and 3) Novel therapies targeting mitochondria that modulate cardiac risk factors and may potentially treat cardiovascular disease. Upcoming meetings are deep diving to focus on specific mitochondrial functions.
