Dr. Schermuly is Section Leader of Experimental Pulmonary Hypertension in the Clinical Research Group on Respiratory Insufficiency in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Giessen, a position he has held since 2002.
In 1996 Dr. Schermuly received his PhD from the University of Giessen and in 2006 he became an associate professor in experimental pneumonology and pathophysiology. His research training consists of a postdoctoral fellowship in the Clinical Research Group on respiratory insufficiency, a position as project leader in a study of the cardiopulmonary vascular system, and project leader in the Clinical Research Group on fibrosis (2004).
Dr. Schermuly is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Pneumologie, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Innere Medizin, and the European Respiratory Society. He has won several awards from the European Respiratory Society (e.g., first recipient of the newly announced "ERS Pulmonary Hypertension Research Award" in 2006) as well as a poster award from the German Society for Internal Intensive Medicine and Emergency Medicine (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internistische Intensivmedizin und Notfallmedizin).
