Hemolysis-associated Pulmonary Hypertension
Dr. Machado is an investigator in the Vascular Medicine Branch of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and an attending physician in the Critical Care Medicine Department of the NIH Clinical Center.
After earning his medical degree from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil, Dr. Machado completed residencies in internal medicine at the university’s Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre (January 1994 to December 1995; chief medical resident January to May 1996), and at the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital/VA Medical Center (1997 to 1999; chief medical resident 1999 to 2000). In addition to his residency in Miami, he also served from 1999 to 2000 as clinical instructor in the university's Department of Medicine. He then moved on to fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the Cleveland Clinic (July 2000 to June 2003) and in the Laboratory of Chemical Biology at the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) at the National Institutes of Health (July 2003 to September 2004).
Dr. Machado has given more than 20 national and international presentations and co-authored more than 30 publications, including four text book chapters in various areas of pulmonary medicine. His recent research interests include the physiologic and therapeutic roles of nitric oxide and carbon monoxide in pulmonary medicine and pulmonary hypertension in sickle cell disease. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Physicians, the American Physiological Society, and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.
