Presentation Title
The Modulation of Mitochondrial Respiration by Nitrite during Ischemia/Reperfusion (Summary of Presentation)
Dr Shiva earned her PhD in cellular and molecular pathology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2004 and is currently a fellow in the Vascular Medicine Branch, NHLBI, NIH. Dr Shiva’s research interests focus on the mechanisms by which reactive nitrogen species regulate tissue function, particularly in the context of hypoxia and ischemia. Specifically her projects include 1) determining the effects of nitrite on mitochondrial respiration, ATP generation, and reactive oxygen species generation during ischemia/reperfusion in isolated mitochondria and physiological animal models, 2) determining the role of heme proteins (hemoglobin and myoglobin) in modulating nitrite-dependent regulation of mitochondrial function, and 3) characterization of tissue dependent uptake and metabolism of nitrite.
