Speaker Topic
Nitrogen Oxides in the Nitrite/Hb Reaction

Dr. Kim-Shapiro received his Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1993. He is an associate professor of physics and also holds appointments in the departments of molecular medicine and biomedical engineering at Wake Forest University. Earlier in his career, Dr. Kim-Shapiro served in the Peace Corps (1984-1986) as a college-level physics instructor at L'Institut Superieur du Pedagogy, in Zaire. He holds an NIH Independent Scientist Career Award for 2004-2009.

Dr. Kim-Shapiro is interested in using light, especially polarized light, to learn about biological structure and function. He is currently studying the effects of nitric oxide and aggregation in biological systems, especially as it relates to sickle cell disease. He has published nearly 60 papers.
