Presentation Summary
Dr. Zorov is a Professor of Biochemistry and Chief of the laboratory
Mitochondrial Structure and Functions at A.N.Belozersky Institute of Physico-Chemical
Biology, Moscow State University, Russia. He joined the Institute in 1973
as a Junior Scientific Researcher, promoted to Senior Scientific Researcher
(1986), then to a Principal Scientific Researcher (1989). He became a Full
Professor in Biochemistry in 1997. Currently he works part time in the Laboratory
of Cardiovascular Sciences, Gerontology Research Center, NIA, NIH, Baltimore,
MD as an Adjunct Investigator.
Dr. Zorov attended Moscow State University where he obtained a Diploma in
Biochemistry (1970), a Ph. D in Biochemistry and then a Doctor of Science
in Biochemistry in 1988. He was a postdoctoral fellow of Prof. Britton Chance
at the Johnson Research Foundation, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia
(1977-1978) then worked as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Albany,
NY (1989-1992) and as a Visiting Scientist at the Gerontology Research Center,
NIA, NIH (1993-1995).
Dr. Zorov published over 100 of original peer-reviewed papers. His research
interests focus on the different aspects of mitochondrial functioning including
the role of mitochondria in cell death and the development of a strategy
for anti-ischemic defense. His pioneering work on the proof of the electric
cable properties of mitochondria, mitochondrial fragmentation, mitochondrial
ion channels and mitochondrial permeability transition has received world-wide
recognition. His main interests center on studying mitochondria in situ in
their normal intracellular milieu.
