Session Chair: The Mitochondria as a Therapeutic Target in Cardiovascular Disease (Oct. 7, 3:05)
Heinrich Taegtmeyer is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Texas Houston Medical School, a position he has held since 1991.
Dr. Taegtmeyer received his MD (summa cum laude) from the University of Freiburg. Germany, in 1968, and his DPhil in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford, England, in 1981.
His research interests are the regulation of energy substrate metabolism, gene expression and signal transduction in the heart. His laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms by which metabolically generated signals regulate protein synthesis and degradation in the heart. Clinical studies investigate the molecular mechanisms of heart failure and the effects of diabetes and obesity on the heart. Dr. Taegtmeyer is a Fellow of the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences and of the American Heart Association (AHA), the American College of Cardiology, and the American College of Physicians.
