Presentation Summary
Dr. Steenbergen is currently a Professor of Pathology at Johns Hopkins Univeristy in Baltimore, a position he has held since 2006. Before that, Dr. Steenbergen was an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Duke University (1984-2006), where he was tenured in 1994.
Dr. Steenbergen received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978 and his PhD in Biophysics from the same institution in 1979. He then completed two postdoctoral fellowships: the first in Biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania in 1979 and the second in Pathology at Duke University in 1980. From 1980-1984, Dr. Steenbergen completed his residency in Anatomic Pathology at Duke University.
Dr. Steenbergen works primarily on mechanisms of ischemic heart disease and, in particular, endogenous mechanisms that can be activated to protect the heart during a subsequent episode of ischemia and reperfusion. Specifically, Dr. Steenbergen is interested in identifying signal transduction pathways that are involved in cardioprotection, and understanding how these signaling pathways confer their protective effect.
