Presentation Summary

Dr. Spiegelman is a Professor of Cell Biology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, positions he has held since 1993. He joined both institutions in 1982 as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology. He was then promoted to Associate Professor (1987) and Professor (1991) of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology.

Dr. Spiegelman received a BS with highest honors from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and a PhD from Princeton University in New Jersey. His graduate work was immediately followed by postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.

Dr. Spiegelman was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, USA, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2002 and to the European Molecular Biology Organization in 2006. He has published over 250 original peer-reviewed papers. His research interests center on the molecular basis of cell differentiation and tissue development, using adipogenesis as a model system, as well as the biochemical mechanisms of metabolic diseases relating to adipogenesis. More recently, his group has been trying to alter cancer cell growth by stimulating pathways of terminal differentiation.
