Mitochondrial Gene Expression and Signaling in Disease and Aging (Oct. 6, 9:15 AM)
Presentation Summary

Gerald S. Shadel is an Associate Professor of Pathology at Yale University. Previously he was Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Emory University.

Dr. Shadel earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1986. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. Following this, Dr.Shadel completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Developmental Biology at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California in the Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Research Fund.

Dr. Shadel’s research interests today focus on defining the mechanism of gene expression in mitochondria in order to understand the regulation of mtDNA. He has made numerous exciting contributions to this field such as finding the connection between TOR signaling pathways and mitochondrial gene expression. He has been the recipient of many honors including the Amgen Outstanding Investigator Award in 2007 and the Glenn AFAR/Breakthroughs in Gerontology Award, also in 2007.
