Rainer Schulz is a Professor at the Institute of Pathophysiology at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany; a position he has held since 2001. He was an Assistant Professor in the same department from 1996 to 2000.

Professor Schulz obtained his MD in 1992 and his PhD in 1996 from the University of Duisburg-Essen. The title of his thesis was “Endogenous Cardioprotection: Myocardial Hibernation and Ischemic Preconditioning.”

Professor Shulz has authored over 110 peer-reviewed original research manuscripts focusing on cardioprotection and ischemic preconditioning, adaptive mechanisms to prolonged myocardial ischaemia, determinants of early ischaemic arrhythmias, and mechanisms of sudden cardiac death.
