Mitochondria-Targeted Antioxidants as Potential Therapies
(Oct. 7, 9:15 AM )
Presentation Summary
Since 2001, Dr. Murphy has been a Group Leader at the Medical Research Council’s Dunn Human Nutrition Unit in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Prior to that appointment he was an Associate Professor in the Biochemistry Department of the University of Otago in New Zealand. From 1990-1992, Dr. Murphy was a Lecturer in the Biochemistry Department of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.
He obtained his PhD in Biochemistry from Cambridge University, United Kingdom in 1987. He then conducted his postdoctoral research at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.
The goal of Dr. Murphy’s research is to understand how mitochondria produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and peroxynitrite, and the effects of these ROS on mitochondria and cells. An important aspect of this work is the development of novel probe and antioxidant molecules that are targeted to mitochondria.
