Since 1994 Gary Lopaschuk has been a Professor of Pediatrics and Pharmacology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta. He is also Director of the Cardiovascular Research Group at the University of Alberta and Scientific Director of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. Dr. Lopaschuk joined the University of Alberta in 1986 as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. Before that he was Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Pharmacology at the University of Toronto, Canada (1985–1986).

Dr. Lopaschuk obtained his PhD from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He conducted his postdoctoral research at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania (1983–1985).

His research focuses on the regulation of fatty acid oxidation and the mechanism by which high rates of fatty acid oxidation contribute to ischemic injury, as well as how alterations in fatty acid metabolism contribute to cardiovascular disease in diabetic individuals. He has published over 190 original research articles and over 60 reviews and book chapters.
