W. Jonathan Lederer is a Professor in the Physiology Department at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, a position he has held since 1979. Since 1999, he has been the Director of the Medical Biotechnology Center, University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI). Prior to that, he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular Biology & Biophysics at UMBI (1995–1999).
Dr. Lederer received his MD (1975) and PhD (1976) from Yale University. Following an Internship in Medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle (1976–1977), Dr. Lederer conducted postdoctoral work with Denis Noble at Oxford University, United Kingdom (1977–1979).
Dr. Lederer has published over 150 research articles. His research focuses on calcium signaling in heart in both the normal and diseased state and he co-discovered calcium sparks, a fundamental event in cardiac calcium signaling. Dr. Lederer is a founding fellow of the International Society for Heart Research and was elected a Fellow of the Biophysical Society in 2002.
