Proteolytic Control of Mitochondrial Biogenesis and Dynamics
(Oct. 6, 8:15 AM )
Presentation Summary

Thomas Langer is a Professor at the Institute for Genetics at the University of Cologne in Germany. He has held this position since 2000.

Professor Langer obtained his PhD in 1993. He did his graduate work at the University of Munich and then at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute in New York City, where his supervisor, Professor Franz-Urlich Hartl, moved to. Professor Langer then conducted his postdoctoral research at the Adolf Butenandt Institute of Physiological Chemistry at the University of Munich (1993-1996) and the Collaborative Research Center, also at the University of Munich (1996-2000).

Today, his group is interested in the proteolytic system of mitochondria, which ensures the quality control of mitochondrial proteins and regulates key steps during mitochondrial biogenesis. Using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and transgenic and conditional knockout mice as model systems, Professor Langer has been analyzing the function of conserved mitochondrial proteases at the molecular level, as well as their physiological roles and their pathogenic relevance in mammals.
