Dr. Kelly is the Tobias and Hortense Lewin Professor at Washington University and Chief of the Cardiovascular Division in the Department of Medicine of Washington University School of Medicine. He is also the Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Research at the University. Dr. Kelly joined Washington University School of Medicine in 1989 and moved up the ranks from Instructor of Medicine (1989-1990), to Assistant Professor of Medicine (1990-1995) and of Molecular Biology and Pharmacology (1993-1995), to Associate Professor of Medicine and Molecular Biology and Pharmacology (1995-1999), to tenured Professor (1999-present).
Dr. Kelly obtained his MD from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 1982. He was an Intern (1982-1983) and an Assistant Resident in Medicine (1983-1985) at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, and then a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Biological Chemistry ((1985-1987) and a Clinical Cardiology Fellow (1987-1989) at Washington University School of Medicine.
His research interests include the transcriptional control of cellular energy metabolism and mitochondrial biogenesis in striated muscle, the biology and physiology of nuclear receptors in striated muscle, the molecular mechanisms of cardiac hypertrophic growth, and the molecular and metabolic basis of diabetic cardiac dysfunction. He is the author of over 90 peer-reviewed original research papers focusing on these areas.
