Dr. Hwang is an Investigator in the Translational Medicine Branch of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He joined the Institute in 2001.

After receiving his MD and PhD degrees from Johns Hopkins University in 1993, he trained in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco from 1993 to 1996. He then returned to Johns Hopkins Hospital for clinical training in cardiology and a Howard Hughes fellowship in genetics (1996-2001).

His laboratory has shown that tumor suppressor gene p53 can regulate mitochondrial respiration. He is continuing to study novel pathways important for mitochondrial function in model systems as well as translating them to human studies to understand their role in cardiovascular and general health.
