Role of Skeletal Muscle in Human Energy Metabolism (Oct. 7, 10:55 AM )
Presentation Summary

Dr. Chen is the Director of the Metabolic Research Core at the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) at NIH. He joined NIDDK in 2006, after serving as Director of the Energy Balance Core Lab and Human Metabolism and Exercise Physiology Lab at Vanderbilt University.

He obtained his PhD in 1997 and his Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) in 2002, both from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Today, Dr. Chen studies the factors influencing whole-body energy expenditure and substrate oxidation in healthy individuals and in people suffering from obesity and other metabolic conditions. Dr. Chen's lab also focuses on developing technologies to accurately measure energy metabolism, physical activity, body composition, autonomic nervous system activity, and dietary intake. These state-of-art technologies are then applied in clinical studies to quantify how physiology regulates energy intake and expenditure in different individuals or, in the same individual, in different environments and at various stages of life.
