John C. Marshall is a Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery and a member of the Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Toronto, and a critical care surgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital. From 1990-1995, he was Associate Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at The Toronto Hospital. From 1995-2004, he was Director of Research, Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the University Health Network in Toronto. From 2003-2005, he was Head of the Division of Clinical Investigation and Human Physiology, Toronto General Research Institute, University Health Network.
He graduated with an Honours Arts degree (1969) followed by a MD Honours degree (1977) from the University of Toronto. He undertook his surgical training at Dalhousie University in Halifax, followed by a Chief Resident position in General Surgery at Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He then completed a research fellowship in surgical immunobiology and critical care at McGill University.
Dr. Marshall’s clinical interests are sepsis, trauma, and critical care. His academic interests are sepsis and the dynamics of host-macrobial interactions. Current areas of focus of his graduate students and research associates are a novel inflammatory cytokine-Pre-B cell colony enhancing factor (P-BEF)-and the role of tyrosine phosphorylation in the regulation of apoptotic enzyme activity. He has been actively involved in the design and conduct of clinical trials in sepsis, serving as an advisor to a number of pharmaceutical companies undertaking research in this area, and has a particular interest in outcome measures in clinical trials. Dr. Marshall serves as the Chair of the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group and as the Treasurer and Chair-Elect of the International Sepsis Forum. He has published more than 170 peer-reviewed papers and 65 chapters and has edited 2 books. Dr. Marshall is on a number of Editorial Boards including Shock, Critical Care, and Current Opinion in Critical Care.
