Dr. Nathens has just joined the Univeristy of Toronto. Previously
Dr. Nathens was a Trauma Surgeon at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and
Associate
Professor
of
Surgery
at
the University
of Washington.
He was also the Director of Surgical Critical Care Services at Harborview
and Director of the Acute Care Section at Harborview Injury Prevention and
Research
Center. Dr. Nathens completed his surgical training at the University of Toronto,
where he pursued his doctoral degree focusing on the role of oxidative stress
on the inflammatory response. In 2000, Dr. Nathens earned his MPH in Epidemiology
at the University of Washington and completed a clinical fellowship in trauma
and critical care.
Dr. Nathens’ has focused his research efforts on both prospective cohort studies and interventional trials evaluating and modulating the inflammatory response following injury. He is a participating investigator in NIGMS’ large collaborative program “Inflammation and the Host Response to Injury” where he is playing a role in elucidating the principal determinants of early gene expression following injury. He has also extensively studied the role of blood transfusion in this response through a series of randomized controlled trials evaluating the impact of leukoreduced blood transfusion. |
