Dr. Chakraborty obtained his BSc with honors from the University College, London, and his PhD summa cum laude from the Free University of Berlin, Germany. He received his Habilitation from the University of Wuerzburg and was Heisenberg Scholar of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Currently, Dr. Chakraborty is Professor and Director of the Institute of Medical Microbiology of Justus-Liebig-University, Giessen, Germany. He is also chairman and coordinator of both the Infection and Inflammation Network of the German National Genome Research Network (NGFN) and the Giessen Research Center in Infectious Diseases (GRID) and is an Executive Member of the Steering Committee of the NGFN. Dr. Chakraborty is also Vice-Chairman of the Collaborative Research Initiative (Sonderforschungsbereich SFB 535) on "Adhesion, Invasion and Intracellular Lifestyles of Pathogens" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). He is co-Founder and Chief Scientific Advisor to the company TGC Biomics in Mainz, Germany, which has specialist proprietary technologies in the area of pharmaceutical proteins, pharmaccines, and protein and gene delivery systems.
Dr. Chakraborty's areas of scientific interest are functional genomics of host-pathogen interactions, gene targeting, and genomics of critical illness and sepsis. He served on the editorial boards of several professional journals and is ad-hoc reviewer for numerous scientific journals.
Dr. Chakraborty is recipient of a number of Personal (peer-reviewed) Research Grants from the German Research Foundation (DFG), Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), German Cancer Research Council, Humboldt Foundation, World Health Organisation, and European Union. He is the author and co-author of over 180 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
